Today, the hardships of migration and confrontations with the alien English-language based culture of the US are creating a wider sense of a common destiny among people of Spanish language or heritage, including the diverse people who are called "Hispanics" or "Latinos" in the United States. Their differences of skin-color, national histories, resources and skills become less significant in the face of the far more dramatic contrasts with the "American" -- i.e., the US -- majority's way of doing things. Real, lived experience is extending the boundaries of the imagined "Hispanic nation" far beyond the narrow ranks of the intellectuals who first proclaimed it 190 years ago.
"América Latina", país mítico, abarca un sinfín de regiones ecológica, histórica y políticamente diversas. Sin embargo, la unidad de lenguaje y de herencia colonial entre los 19 países hispano- y el único país lusoamericano siempre ha fomentado entre la intelectualidad la imagen de región unitaria, con destino común. Hoy día, las dificultades de la migración y las confrontaciones, muchas veces penosas, con la cultura angloamericana hacen que ese sentido de destino común alcance otros sectores de la hispanidad, incluyendo los llamados "hispanos" o "latinos" de los EE.UU. Las diferencias de color, de historias nacionales, de bienes materiales y de capacitación pierden importancia frente al contraste much más drámatico con la cultura yanqui.
